Hyundai has unveiled the 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric crossover ahead of its debut next week in Geneva. As expected the Kona Electric will be offered with two battery pack options, with the biggest option giving the electric crossover a driving range up to 292 miles.
The base Kona Electric will be powered by a 133 horsepower electric motor with 291 lb-ft. of torque that gets its power from a 39.2-kWh battery pack. The base model can travel up to 186 miles on a single charge. Move up to the higher spec version and you’ll get a 201 horsepower motor and a bigger 64-kWh battery, which gives the Kona Electric a range up to 292 miles. The short range model reaches 62 mph in 9.3 seconds while the long-range Kona Electric reaches the same speed in 7.6 seconds.
Luckily charging the Kona Electric won’t take much effort, since Hyundai says that a 100-kW DC fast charger can charge both models up to 80 percent in only 54 minutes.
The styling of the Kona Electric is nearly identical to the gas powered Kona and even with the large battery pack, there aren’t any big penalties to interior volume or its cargo space. The battery packs are neatly packaged on the floor of the Kona Electric. On the outside the biggest styling differences are new 17-inch wheels and a slightly restyled front fascia with a new grille.
