23-Year-Old Model Didn’t Know She Was Pregnant Until She Gave Birth to a Daughter in Her Bathroom

Erin Langmaid is a 23-year-old from Melbourne, Australia. She is best known for work as a model, but most recently, people have taken an interest in her birth story.

In fact, Langmaid carried her child to term and never knew she was pregnant until she gave birth in the bathroom of her home.

On November 2, Langmaid took to Instagram to say the past week was “the hardest week of our lives.” Alongside an adorable black and white photo of her and her boyfriend, Langmaid continued, “You are my rock. And now you are Isla’s. [Two] years with you.”

In an interview with News 7, despite not knowing she was pregnant for nine months, Isla was born a healthy baby, who weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces at birth. However, regardless of the fact that Isla was the average size of a baby born in the United States (7.5 pounds), Langmaid admits she had no idea she was pregnant until she met her baby girl for the first time.

The new mom called the entire experience “bizarre.” “I wasn’t showing obviously because I fit into everything. It’s just really bizarre.”

She never grew a baby bump, never experienced morning sickness, never developed any strange cravings, nothing that would indicate she was pregnant. In fact, Langmaid was still getting her routine contraceptive injections to avoid an unexpected pregnancy.

The only time Langmaid felt unwell was on her daughter’s birthday. However, she didn’t understand why she felt ill until Isla was born in her bathroom. The model said she labored for all of 10 minutes before Isla arrived.

As Healthline reports, unknown pregnancies are often called a cryptic pregnancy or a stealth pregnancy. “Anecdotal evidence suggests that women might not be aware of their pregnancies in up to 1 out of 475 cases.” And according to Healthline, Langmaid isn’t the first woman who was “taken by surprise by labor pains that are their first real ‘sign’ of pregnancy.”

Happy birthday to my no.1 ❤️

Langmaid’s boyfriend, Dan Carty, said of the scene, “I heard a scream and I ran in there and then I saw the little one and I thought, hang on there’s two.” And when he realized their daughter wasn’t breathing, Dan quickly called first responders for help.

Luckily, the dispatcher who took their emergency call knew just how to help the surprised couple and got little Isla breathing again. Now, she’s a happy little bundle of joy for her parents who are now trying to figure everything out on the go.

Dan wrote on his own Instagram page, “We want to share with you our new little family member.
Isla May was brought into the world on Tuesday night, she lived in mummy’s tummy for 9 months without letting us know.” He continued:

“After an extremely tough few days both mother and daughter are perfectly well and ready to go home. The support of our family and friends is something that we will never be able to thank them enough for. To Erin the courage you have shown is something I didn’t think possible, you are an incredible person and will be an amazing mum. Now after a big week we look forward to life as a little fam with the most gorgeous new little addition and all the great things that come with that!”

Langmaid told News 7, “I’m still in shock, but you just adjust and this is our life now. We wouldn’t change it.”

And it seems that Langmaid is adjusting just fine, all things considered. Since welcoming Isla, Langmaid has continued to share updates and photos from her new family life.

Full of sass ????????

She captioned this sweet photo of Isla peering at the camera while wearing a sleeper, “Full of sass.” We do sense some attitude in that expression! And we love it!

Langmaid captioned this photo of the whole family, “Here’s another photo of Isla and Dan looking like an idiot after two beers.” She also added, “FYI on @triple_j tonight at 9pm tonight talking about the little goose if anyone is up.” She spoke with the outlet about her surprising experiences.

When you realise it’s vaccine day ????

There’s another adorable photo of Isla, who looks caught halfway between a smile and a look of great surprise. The caption, which reads, “When you realize it’s vaccine day,” may go a ways in explaining that expression!

Langmaid also shared this cute mother-daughter mirror selfie with a caption that reads, “just two gals hiding from the 44 degree heat.” Isla looks so cute propped up on her mama’s lap! We hope the temperatures didn’t weigh them down too much!

Dan also shared a Christmas snap of little Isla. In the photo, the baby is propped up on a pillow in front of the family’s lit-up Christmas tree and a big pile of presents. “The queen with her loot,” he captioned the photo. It looks like Isla had a very good first Christmas indeed!

“Wish my name was Kochie”

A post shared by Daniel Carty (@dan_carty) on

In fact, Dan has been sharing just as many cute photos of Isla as Isla. He shared the one above, featuring Isla in an oversized sweatsuit — they’re never too young to start dressing for contemporary trends! — with the caption, “Wish my name was Kochie.”

He also shared a too-cute-for-words post-bath photo. “Our little Harold Bishop after a hard-earned rinse,” Dan captioned the photo. It is a reference to the long-running and super-popular Australian soap opera Neighbours. Russell Crowe, Chris Hemsworth, and Kylie Minogue all got their start on the soap, as did actress Isla Fisher, who, obviously, shares a name with the Langmaid’s baby.

Meanwhile, Erin hasn’t exactly been slacking on the cute photos either!

Langmaid also found the time to take baby Isla to the famed Baby Spa in Australia, where the little one had a swim using their inflatable floating neck pillows. “Not only was Isla pampered by the girls, there are sooo many benefits, including sleep promotion,” Langmaid said in the caption.

Come on! How cute is that? Baby Isla looks so chill and relaxed! We’re honestly quite jealous. If you aren’t familiar with Baby Spa, this video gives you a sample of the cuteness that happens within its walls. Videos from Baby Spa often go viral, so the next time you see a clip on Facebook or Twitter, you’ll know what the deal is!

Lastly, Langmaid shared a photo just after New Year’s day. In the photo, she is holding baby Isla, and both are looking straight into the camera. The caption reads, “2019 was definitely not what we expected, but what a blessing this little nugget has been ???? let’s go 2020 ????”

Despite her dramatic and surprising year, it seems Erin Langmaid and her family have really embraced their unique situation. With a healthy, beautiful baby girl, the family seems ready to take on the world. It just goes to show that not all surprises are bad surprises. Congratulations to the happy family, and we wish you nothing but good times in 2020 and beyond!
