Watch Chicago Blackhawks Mascot Tommy Hawk Give a Beatdown to a Rowdy Fan

This is embarrassing.

Everyone knows the old jokes about fights breaking out during hockey games. The cliche is based in reality, but sometimes that reality takes weird forms. Like the video above, which shows Chickago Blackhawks mascot Tommy Hawk going toe-to-toe with a violent fan and taking said fan to school.

That’s right, the guy in the foam suit appeared to put a hurting on some idiot following the Blackhawks’ Friday loss to the Winnipeg Jets.

The hero

From the Chicago Sun-Times:

Chicago police confirmed they were notified of a disturbance at the United Center around 11:15 p.m. Friday. Police said a “male was performing as a team mascot” when another man began punching him in the face and put him in a headlock.

But the police narrative doesn’t necessarily match the scene caught on video, which was widely circulated online.

In a series of Snapchat videos which were shared on Twitter, Tommy Hawk is seen pushing the man and landing a few jabs of his own.

It seems Tommy Hawk may have had a pretty good reason to defend himself—according to hockey blogger Steve Glynn the fan tried to take off the mascot‘s head.

Here’s something people don’t think about: It’s hot as hell inside those suits and the people who wear them have to be in pretty good shape. Maybe they’re not too ill-equipped to handle drunk idiot shenanigans.

Fans vs. mascots is actually a fascinating video subgenre on Youtube, though the craziness happens more often in the NBA.

The Blackhawks say they are looking into the incident, hopefully just to make sure they have a good reason to high five the guy in the suit.
