Say It Ain’t So: Terrell Suggs Is Leaving The Ravens

The longtime Baltimore LB appears to be headed west, to where he played his college ball.

After 16 years, 132.5 sacks, 7 Pro Bowls and one Super Bowl victory, longtime Baltimore Ravens linebacker, Terrell Suggs, has informed his only NFL employer that he won’t be returning to the team this season.

That’s right cheering AFC North fans, Terrell Suggs is leaving the division and is expected to be returning to the state of Arizona, where he played college ball for the Arizona State Sun Devils, to play for the Cardinals.

In a time of big time free agent contracts and injuries, Suggs has been an anomaly in both football and sports. Since being drafted out of Arizona St. by the Ravens with the tenth pick in the 2003 NFL Draft, Suggs has remained with the team that drafted him, rewarding them by constantly being a defensive terror for opposing teams. He was the 2003 AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, the 2011 AP Defensive Player of the Year and stands as the Ravens’ all time leader in sacks. He’s 13th on the all time sack list and, now that Julius Peppers has retired, Suggs stands as the sack master among active players.

Last season, Suggs had 7 sacks for the #1 ranked Ravens defense. If he duplicates that performance this season with the Cardinals, he would be tied for 7th with Jason Taylor (139.5) and would only need 3 more to pass Hall of Famer, Michael Strahan, for sixth place.

With Suggs leaving, the Ravens now have two, and possibly as many as five, holes to fill on the top ranked defense from 2018.

Ravens had the No. 1 defense in the league, in 2018. OLB Terrell Suggs – gone. FS Eric Weddle – gone. ILB CJ Mosley – likely gone. DE Brent Urban – FA. OLB Za’Darius Smith – likely gone. These were all starters. Really interested to see how this plays out in 2019.
