Land Rover Just Added a Slick Compact SUV to Its Already Formidable Arsenal

Meet the all-new Velar.

Land Rover

Land Rover‘s family of SUVs will grow at next month’s Geneva Motor Show when the company rolls out its latest model, an in-betweener that will slot between the mid-size Discovery Sport and the subcompact Evoque.

The Land Rover Velar draws its name from the Range Rover prototypes built in the 1960s. While details and additional images will have to wait until the official announcement at the show, Land Rover promises all-new consumer technologies aboard Velar.

“We call the Velar the avant-garde Range Rover,” said Land Rover chief design officer, Gerry McGovern. “It brings a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the brand.”

Land Rover tells us that the Velar will pioneer use of sustainable materials in its construction, so we will have to see what exactly that entails.

The “Velar” name was applied to the secret Range Rover prototypes Land Rover built when it was planning a new model line, borrowing from the Latin, “velare,” meaning “veil” or “cover.”

Now we await the official un-Velaring of the Velar in Geneva.
