Awkwafina won a Gotham Independent Film Awards for The Farewell, beating out Florence Pugh for Midsommar, Alfre Woodard for Clemency, Mary Kay Place for something called Diane, and Elisabeth Moss for the atrociously named Her Smell. Whether that’s enough for her to rep the indies at the Oscars, I don’t know; she did NOT get nominated for an Independent Spirit Award, despite the movie being recognized, so who knows. But I’m rooting for this to happen for Nora Lum, something I never would have predicted when we was working the VMAs red carpet for Cosmo and she co-hosted it with the Girl Code people. The world is a magical surprise sometimes.
