The wait about what Kanye West and Kim Kardashian would name their third child is finally over. Kardashian finally revealed their new daughter’s name on Friday, four days after she was born via a surrogate: Chicago West (or Chi, pronounced ‘shy’, for short).
The announcement follows a few social media fake-outs: On Wednesday, Kim posted a photo of Louis Vuitton’s classic monogram, leading many to believe baby #3 had an LV-inspired name like Elle V West, L West or Louis West. There was some logic behind the assumptions, as Kim and Kanye are known fans of the brand. Kanye has dropped references to the design house in numerous songs and Kim made some waves on Twitter last week when she posted a Snapchat of some monogrammed trash cans that caught her eye.

Now that it’s been announced, the inspiration for the name seems fairly clear: West was raised in Chicago, in suburban Oak Lawn. Little Chicago West is in good company, name-wise; drawing your child’s moniker from a locale is pretty common practice for celebrities.
Some, like the Karsashian-Wests, choose sentimental names: Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon named one of their twins Moroccan, not after the country, but after the Moroccan-themed room in their home where Nick proposed. Alicia Keys and husband Swizz Beatz named their son Egypt, to commemorate Keys’ solo soul-searching trip to Egypt. And fellow Kardashian baby Penelope Scotland was given her middle name as a way to honour her dad, Scott Disick. Others have chosen their children’s names for reasons besides sentimental value: Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky picked India Rose just because they liked it (Chris was hoping for ‘Indiana’ if the child had been born a boy), and Reese Witherspoon explained her son Tennessee’s name as “just another redneck name.”
The question remains, how will West feel if Chicago wears Chicago Bears gear over Yeezy drops?
