Fall Leaf Art Activity For Preschool

Children don’t need to be told what to make and how to make it. Crafts are fun, but children also need the opportunity to create something all their own. This invitation to create with fall leaves provides the perfect opportunity to do just that.

In this open-ended Fall leaf activity, children will create using fall leaves. There is no right or wrong way to do this. Allow the children to choose how to use the materials placed in front of them and what they will make. This gives them the opportunity to explore their own creativity and practice using art materials.

Supplies Needed For Fall Leaves Art Activity

• Fall leaves
• Mod Podge (optional)
• Foam brush (optional)
• Paintbrushes
• Tempera paints
• Paint tray or plate
• Googly eyes
• Glue
• Apron or paint smock

Fall Leaves Activity Preparation

Step 1 – Seal the Fall Leaves (Optional)
Use the foam brush to paint Mod Podge onto the fall leaves. This will preserve and protect the leaves and will help the tempera paint adhere to their surfaces.

Step 2 – Set Up Invitation to Create Fall Leaves Art
Place fall leaves, tempera paint colors of choice, paintbrushes, googly eyes, and glue on a work surface.

Invite Child to Create Fall Art Activity

Place an apron or painting smock on your children and allow them to have fun creating fall leaf art. Again, there is no right or wrong way to do this. Simply present the materials and have your children play and create whatever they want.

When commenting on the children’s work, focus on their efforts and on describing what you see as opposed to evaluating the artist or the result. Use phrases such as “Wow, you really worked hard to make this” or “I see lots of red and yellow.” Stay away from comments such as “You’re so talented” or “You are such a good artist.” The former phrases will motivate them to create in the future while the latter may set them up for disappointment later in life. Choose your comments wisely.

Your comments could also encourage the young artists to explain their thinking or process: “Tell me about this part (pointing).” or “How did you do that?”

This process art activity with leaves allows children to practice using art materials and flexing their creative muscles. What will your children create?
