Honey Boo Boo Confronts Mama June After Year-Long Estrangement: ‘Why Weren’t You There When I Needed You Most?’

“Mama” June Shannon is the target of scrutiny in an upcoming episode of Mama June: Road to Recovery in which Alana, who is better known as Honey Boo Boo, confronts her mother who has struggled with addiction in recent years.

The upcoming episode which was previewed on E! Online, shows Mama June has some explaining to do to her daughters Lauryn “Pumpkin” Shannon, 21, and Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson, 15, who ask tough questions of the mother who all but abandoned the family.

The family meeting, which is moderated by family therapist Dr. Ish Major, captures Alana’s raw emotions as she tearily confronts her mother. “It’s just hard because you [weren’t] there for my first day of high school, and I think that’s a pretty big thing,” Alana tells her mother in the clip.

“It was hard for me not having my mom there, and I had to come home and tell Pumpkin what I was doing,” the teen goes on to say. “I’m very grateful that Pumpkin was there for me, but why weren’t you there? Why weren’t you there when I needed you most?”

Mama June’s struggles with addiction have been well documented since her 2019 arrest for felony drug possession and the subsequent fallout was featured heavily on the last season of her reality show. She spent time in rehab and has claimed to have been sober for 14 months.

Alana goes on to express the fear she felt for her mother over the possibility that her mom could overdose on an illicit substance.

“You don’t know how many nights I cried myself to sleep just hoping and praying that you didn’t overdose,” Honey Boo Boo said in the emotional exchange.

“‘God, please don’t let my mom die. Please, just hold onto her. Just, please!’ I just wanted you there, and even if I texted your phone, I wouldn’t even get a text back. So hell, I never knew if you were alive or dead anyways,” Alana admits in the heartbreaking episode.

The episode highlights how destructive parental drug abuse can be for the entire family. As we see with Alana and her mother, the situation can create additional obstacles for a child to navigate. Addiction is such a tragic struggle for all involved and we hope that both Lauryn and Alana feel some sense of relief by getting some of the burden off their chest and out into the world.

Mama June has, so far, been taking the right steps to repair her relationship with her family and to free herself from addiction. We wish this family, who have been through so much, the best as they put in the work to become whole once more.
