Viral Photo Shows Fenty Beauty Dark Foundation Shades Selling Well at Sephora

It's sending a message.

Rihanna's Fenty Beauty has been making waves since its ceremonious launch, drawing praise for its cool products, attention to detail, and inclusive shade range. We noticed the last one firsthand when we heard about the line from Rihanna herself, who stressed the importance of creating 40 different shades of foundation that didn't exclude people of color and including in the collection a universally flattering lip color. "You want people to appreciate the product and not think, Oh, that's cute, but it only looks good on her," she explained. Her shade range has even led her fans to request more inclusive products from Kylie Jenner's Kylie Cosmetics on social media.

The praise of Fenty Beauty's foundation line points to a bigger problem within the beauty industry. While widely available foundations for darker skin tones shouldn't be a rarity, they unfortunately are. Some brands and customers have suggested that this is because dark shades don't sell as well, but a photo recently circulating Instagram should instantly halt that argument. The post reads "The dark Fenty Beauty foundation Shades are sold out everywhere! This is for all the makeup brands who think the dark shades won't sell well," and shows an in-store display of Rihanna's foundations at Sephora. Tellingly, the dark shades are all gone. Of course, it's impossible tell from one photo whether this is the case at every single Sephora. But it's proof enough that it's about time for brands to start thinking more about their consumers and create colors that realistically match the many, not just the few.
