Man accused of killing and eating ex-girlfriend found fit to stand trial

An Indiana man who stands accused of raping and killed his estranged girlfriend — and cooking and eating parts of her body — was found competent to stand trial by a state psychiatrist.

The update comes nearly one year after a judge ruled Joseph Oberhansley incompetent to stand trial, and placed him in the care of the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction, the Courier Journal reports.

Oberhansley has been in custody since 2014, when he was arrested for breaking into the home of his ex-girlfriend Tammy Jo Blanton, 46, and stabbing her to death before cooking and eating several of her organs.

The accused murderer reportedly said in court Thursday that he was “so tired of dealing with all this stuff and being locked in this cage” and just wanted “to be executed.”

He also told Judge Vicki Carmichael that he wanted to fire his attorneys because “they’re trying to control” his thoughts.

'High time that the victim's family saw justice done'

Oberhansley’s legal team has requested one month to talk with him and decide if they want to contest the competency ruling.

"This matter has been going on for four years now, and it's high time that the victim's family saw justice done," Clark County Prosecuting Attorney Jeremy Mull told the Courier Journal Wednesday.

Oberhansley — who faces the death penalty if convicted — was free on parole at the time of Blanton’s death. He previously served 12 years for killing his girlfriend, who was the mother of his child, and shooting his own mother when he was 17.
