Kitchen of the Week: A Blank-Slate Queensland Cottage Kitchen for a Stylist

One of our favorite all-time projects? The rustic yet sophisticated 19th-century timber-and-tin cottage where photographer, stylist, writer, traveler, and shopkeeper Kara Rosenlund lives with her husband, Timothy, in Queensland, Australia. (We originally featured the cottage in our House Call column back in 2012.) Today we’re taking a closer look at the kitchen, with simple, cottage-style bones and endlessly changeable accessories—perfect for the whims of a stylist. Here’s a look.

Above: In keeping with the home’s history as a worker’s cottage, the bones of the renovated kitchen are simple and neutral, with Calacatta marble countertops, a butler’s sink, and a sturdy tiled island. Rosenlund even whitewashed the floors with Porter’s Wood Wash; read her tips here. The result? A blank canvas of a space that never goes out of style, easily changeable with accessories. A canvas window shade and vintage hanging cutting boards add texture.
